Emergency plumber in Bristol: what to do while you wait

If water is coming in fast, what you do in the first five minutes matters more than how quickly anyone can get to you.

Find the stopcock and turn it off

It is usually under the kitchen sink, sometimes in a downstairs cupboard or near the front door. Turn it clockwise until it stops. If you do not know where yours is, find it now rather than during an emergency.

Open the cold taps

Running the cold taps drains the pipework down and reduces how much water is left to come out of the leak.

Turn off the heating

If the leak is on the heating side, switch the boiler off at the programmer. Do not leave a system running that is losing water.

Deal with electrics carefully

If water is anywhere near a consumer unit, sockets or downlights, switch off at the mains and do not touch anything wet. That is worth a call to an electrician as well.
